Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your middle school science teacher? What about your ELA, math, or social studies teacher? For my students, I am all of the above. Throughout most people's schooling experience, they have been able to reap the benefits of more than one teacher. Until this year, my students have not.
The students attending this school are a part of a District 75 school.
Each class is self-contained, meaning they remain in the same room with the same students and one teacher for the majority of every school day. This year, that is about to change. Our school is undergoing major changes to make the students feel as though they are a part of a less restrictive environment, similar to general education schools. Students will now be transitioning from classroom to classroom to learn different subject areas with different teachers. As a school, we are doing everything we can to make our students feel comfortable and more integrated into society. If I had never met my 6th grade math teacher, I would not have become a teacher. If I had never met my 7th grade science teacher, I would not have pursued science in high school. Without knowing and learning from multiple teachers with different strategies and personalities, I do not think I would have gotten the fullest education possible.
My Project
This year, I will be teaching math to 4 classes of students with autism. Individuals with autism generally have a difficult time with change and transition, and this new school model does not cater to those challenges. The new materials I requested, including a timer, binder pencil pouches, and a laminator to create incentive materials, would assist each child by making every transition that much simpler and more organized. These children strive off of structure, and the materials requested would help provide stability and cut down on a chaotic environment. Not only are transitioning materials needed but interactive, engaging math activities, like math shark, are needed for my classroom as well. Children with special needs benefit from tactile learning, and any hands-on math materials would advance their knowledge and continue to push them to be on grade level. Hands-on learning also continuously holds the engagement of the learner, growing their knowledge to an even greater extent.
After working at a school in the South Bronx for over a year, I have learned that many things I used to take for granted are luxuries in this community.
When I was younger, before school began, my mom would take me shopping for new school supplies and new clothes. Many of the students in the environment I work in are lucky if they come in with one notebook, clean clothes, or writing materials. With your help, these children will get what they deserve: an equal and rewarding education.
