Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With a class full of students with special needs, each day is a new adventure. My students come from backgrounds with limited resources, so I try my best to make their time in school as valuable as possible by holding them to high expectations and providing them with opportunities for success.
My students are 1st-3rd graders in a Special Day Class (SDC).
My classroom is specifically for students with Emotional Disturbance (ED). Almost all of my students come from backgrounds with a large amount of trauma and limited resources. Because of their experiences, these children lose the ability to control their emotions and behaviors, resulting in students that hit, kick, scratch, bite, etc. on a regular basis. My classroom supports these students' emotional and behavioral needs, while also helping them learn valuable educational skills that will help them overcome their obstacles.
My Project
I am requesting 10 iPads for my classroom. Currently, the only technology we have for the students in the classroom are two desktop computers. We are fortunate enough to have a school that has purchased innovative reading and math programs online. However, at this point, it is not possible for my students to fully access these programs. With two computers, this means that only two students at a time can be using these programs, leaving other students feeling left out and frustrated. By having the iPads, my students would be able to access these reading and math programs at the same time, allowing them to have a whole class experience and benefit from these educational programs. I believe being able to more fully participate in these online programs will open many opportunities for my students as well as prepare them for technology in the real world.
These iPads will be an extremely valuable resource to my students.
