My classroom is a fun and active environment. We are always on the move doing fun and engaging learning activities, where students are in charge of their learning. First grade is a big year of change. Students begin reading! "Education is the movement from darkness to light." - Allan Bloom
My first grade students are naturally active.
Children ranging from 5-7 years old always need to be on the move to be motivated and engaged in their learning. My school is a large school with over 700 students. Our classroom enrollment is usually high with 20-22 students per year. Classroom management is so important when numbers are this high. We feel so lucky to have students enrolling in our incredible school because of the positive, optimistic and fun learning environment we have. Students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds. We have large number of students who come from low-income families. We make school a place they want to come back to every day.
We have an incredibly energetic principal and assistant principal who know the names of every student on our huge campus. We are a blessed staff to be lead but such wonderful people. This positivity reflects through our students. Each teacher that works on our campus loves their job and has a passion for teaching.
My Project
I am requesting one hokki stool for each student in my classroom for a total of twenty. These stools have a convex base so students can move around while they are sitting down. I have been fortunate enough to see the advantages of using these in my own classroom due to having the use of them for occupational therapy purposes. Students were able to focus better while they were learning. The stools kept their minds focused on the task at hand. These stools work especially well for students who are active because they need the extra movement. They can do their work at their desk while still having their lower body moving. They are light enough to be easily moved around the classroom for small groups. Most times students choose to sit on them instead of on the floor during a whole group lesson as they know it will help them focus better. A 1 to 1 ratio of stools to students would be ideal.
The funding for this project will make a huge difference in my classroom.
Having a 1 to 1 ratio of stools to students would mean there would never be a time a student would be without one of these stools. Students will be able to move while they are completing their desk work or being asked to "sit" but they will be actively engaged in their learning. First graders are active. As a teacher I want to do everything I can to help my students' mind and body work together to learn better. Thank you.
