Learning with LEGOs

My students need 6 Lego sets to help teach and learn a plethera of lessons, from diversity to recycling to financial literacy to environmental lessons.

My Students

Do you remember playing with LEGOs for hours on end? You could have paid attention to those toys all day long. I want to incorporate that high interest into my daily and special lessons.

My students are sixth graders in a fourth, fifth, and sixth grade building in a high poverty, rural, farming town.

They take the responsibility of being the leaders of the school very seriously. My students are hand-on learners. They are also in the process of creating come short 'Lego-mation' films to teach lessons to others. With tough budget times, resources are often the first things to be cut. However, that does not mean that they are not needed.

My Project

My students will use these Lego's in a variety of ways as hands-on tools throughout the school year. They will also use our camcorder to create short 'Lego-mation' films to teach lessons to fellow classmates as well as the entire school. These films will include the lessons in cultural diversity and civil rights (with our multi-racial Lego people), lessons on recycling and waste reduction, lessons on financial literacy such as identifying and spending money. These films will reach a large audience through our school announcements, be sent home for families, and shown to fellow classmates.

This project has a HUGE potential.

I would like for you to imagine 'boring' lessons presented by students through the fun media of Lego-mation. It will capture the students' attention and keep them focused on the material. They will not only be eager to create the lessons, but to share the lessons with others. This could be a great new way to present some material. All we need to make this idea become a reality is some help from generous donors like you. Thank you, in advance!
