Learning how to read can be frustrating. I know because I struggled to read. I was in third grade before I could read fluently. My children are in first grade and are expected to read 40+ words per minute by the end of the year. With your help, my children could have ten new reading activities.
I work for an urban school with a high population on free and reduced lunch.
I know my children's parents want the best for their child because I always have a full house. Like every classroom family, we have our good days and our challenging ones. Everyday, they continue to surprise and delight me with something new they have learned.
My Project
While I meet with students in small group instruction, I want the rest of my students to be actively engaged and learning in reading centers. My students are amazing during this time and have been praised at their discipline and attentiveness by outsiders who visit our classroom but it is a challenge to produce new center activities every week. With your help, I hope to add new center activities that support: beginning, middle and ending sounds, syllables, word families, sight words and writing sentences. There are a total of ten reading center activities that can be used throughout the year to reinforce these skills. I know they will motivate and excite the children into wanting and learning how to read.
Besides the fact that I love working with children everyday, one of the reasons I became a teacher was to instill a love of learning and ease the frustrations when it came to learning how to read.
I was that child in school who could not read. If it were not for the extra support from my teachers and patient mom who endured getting me through my reading assignments, I might not of made it. Just like the people who helped me, I want to help my children and give them the best resources possible.
