This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader."
Margaret Fuller
One of the most important things my children will learn this year is that they can read. This is the year they go from barely reading to reading chapter books. I truly believe that if a child can read their possibilities are limitless.
The children in my class are amazing.
Although it is only the fourth week of school they have settled into our classroom routines remarkably well. What I have learned in reading with each of them is that many of them are reading below grade level. We are working hard in our guided reading groups and literacy centers to become real readers. Every day they come into school excited to see what we will do. They are engaged in reading, word work, writing, and listening stations for two hours each day. We will be readers by the end of first grade!
My Project
These materials will provide another station for those struggling readers in my classroom. The beauty of these Tag pens is that the children can sit down with one of these books and read by themselves. When they come to an unknown word this pen can act as a teacher. It will actually sound words out for them when needed. This would be amazing! I work with several small groups of students each day on goals specific to their needs. When I work with these small groups it is extremely important that I not lose a minute of instructional time. These pens would allow my children to be successful in their reading while I cannot be there with them.
There's only one of me in the classroom and more than 20 first grade students.
These materials would provide my children with support when they are reading to themselves. The books I have selected would also be great to focus on specific letter patterns and sounds that we are working on.
Please help me with the immensely important task of teaching all of my children to read this year.
