Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first book you read that sparked the reading bug in you? My students have not yet been bitten by that bug, but they also haven't had the opportunity to experience books in a more relevant and engaging way. Children learn now by more creative means that appeal to younger minds.
I teach 24 second graders in a low income public school.
Over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. They are amazing students that are inquisitive and energetic. They long to be able to use the technology that they see on TV but don't have the means to do so. These children are from very diverse ethnic, social, and income backgrounds, Hispanic, African-American, Asian, Vietnamese, and Caucasian. Native language is often not English and we, as teachers, are challenged on how best to inspire these children. One common theme with my students though is their desire to learn. Teaching them or any student now, involves creative and innovative methods to capture a child's attention and ingrain the love of reading. Once a child embraces reading, they will never be alone.
My Project
I know that by getting relevant technology in their hands it will not only increase student engagement in meaningful activities but will also foster that love of learning. In a technology driven society learning and using technology will give them the power to compete in our society. Specifically, students will be able to read and interact with e-books, use the Nook as a literacy station, work on fluency, develop literacy skills, reinforce and/or extend their learning. The Nook creates new motivation for students to explore books and reading.
86 percent of all juvenile offenders have reading problems, and 60 percent of prison inmates are illiterate (firstlady.utah.gov).
This is the critical time to spark their interest in reading and create life long learners of technology.
