Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What better way to engage students than through the use of technology?!
My goal as a teacher is to integrate technology into the curriculum as much as possible so that my students are college and career ready. As dual immersion students, they will greatly benefit from the use of iPads.
I have 18 courageous and hard-working 2nd grade students who are building their literacy in not just one but TWO languages!
My students attend a Spanish Dual Immersion Program in California. They have come very far in their language acquisition and they are very proud of being bilingual.
Even with the challenges of learning a second language, my students persevere and encourage each other daily. They enjoy being in the classroom and always go above and beyond what is expected of them.
We have many great resources and generous families in our school. However, with the size of the school, my students do not always get opportunities to use technology during the school day. I want to provide the type of digital equity for my students that will equip them with the necessary technology skills to be college and career ready.
My Project
Through the use of the iPad minis my students will use literacy apps that will help them become more fluent readers as well as inspire a love for reading. They will also have the opportunity to publish their written work as authors on ebook making apps. Something they will be very excited about will be recording audio and video that they can upload to a blog or podcast. They may even be able to share their work globally to other students.
They will also use the iPads to use digital math tools that will strengthen their mathematical understanding and reasoning. Having such tools will encourage critical thinking as well as create excitement for math.
There is a world of possibilities with iPads. Having the iPads in the classroom will facilitate work in centers and it will encourage collaboration with others. In addition, iPads will increase creativity and can facilitate cross-curricular lessons.
I truly believe that technology is necessary in the classroom today.
In order to truly be 21st century learners, students need meaningful exposure to technology. I hope that I can accomplish that through this project.
