My students love to learn! Some struggle learning math without manipulatives. Having a teacher Rekenrek and individual student Rekenreks will foster a deep conceptual understanding of fundamental topics such as place value, addition and subtraction, and the efficient use of five- and ten-structures.
For a little kid, learning how to add and subtract can be challenging without a firm understanding about how numbers work.
Having taught First grade for 14 years, I am anxious to start the 2015-2016 school year well equipped with the essential learning tools that will assist me in facilitating young, enthusiastic minds to meet these learning challenges.
First graders are eager to learn and enjoy hands-on activities. These activities aid in students grasping new concepts and practicing important skills. My school serves students of low socio-economic status. Many of our students receive free or reduced lunches. My school does what it can to provide for our students and families, but there is a need for materials and resources to meet the demands of the Common Core classroom.
My Project
Having a teacher Rekenrek will provide myself with the tools I need to engage all of my students in the study of mathematics. Individual Rekenreks will help my students visually see how numbers work together. This will foster a deep conceptual understanding of fundamental topics such as place value, addition and subtraction, and the efficient use of five- and ten-structures.
The donations will improve our classroom because they will allow my students to discover concepts such composing or decomposing numbers on their own.
They can apply what they are being taught by using these manipulatives.
