Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical school day is designed to promote the students' language and communication opportunities, self-determination through academic and life skills curriculum. I want my students to feel they have the ability to speak his/her mind and actively express ideas like their typical peers.
I teach a class of students who use use Augmentative Alternative Communication.
The program is called TRAIL, which stands for Technology Resources for Accessible Independent Learning. It is a program focused on the power of language, literacy and self-advocacy for students with complex communication needs. The program serves 9th through 12th graders.
My Project
Some of my students have visual impairments, and require color printed materials. All of my 7 students use speech generating devices to help them communicate. Many of their devices have icons paired with the vocabulary. We print the icons in color as a learning tool for language learning. Students use the printed icons to find the same icons on their device while learning the visual attributes of the icons. In addition, all the students use color photos of themselves or a special event to help with generating ideas and topic maintenance when participating in writing activities. Books printed in color are sent home as weekly homework for students who do not have a computer at home. I also print other educational materials and assignments in color for my students with vision impairments. These are just a few ways the students use the color printer. I hope this demonstrates the importance of color printed materials for their educational benefit. We are almost out of ink!
