My Students

I've just transferred to a school that offers a large number of digital devices for student usage. Each academic department has 3 carts of laptops for students to use. Our Media Center sees lots of traffic, but only offers computer access, printing, and a flatbed scanner, in terms of technology.

Our school, like most, consists of varied demographics - from well-off students to homeless students.

Student behavior is excellent compared to other schools I've worked in. We have a 75% graduation rate, which we're chipping away at. We have one computer for every 3 students. 95% of our students attend school daily. Our school itself is in a transitional state, as our principal seeks to improve student success and create a 21st century campus.

My Project

I'm requesting a 3-D printer for our school Media Center. It's a brand new technology, one that I believe will change the world quickly. Housing the device in the Media Center will permit all students and staff to have access to the device. Art classes could design 3-dimensional sculptures and print them. Engineering and math classes can infuse technology into lessons, having students design and print real-world prototypes. The device could also be used to print low-cost awards, trophies, signs, and more. I have previous experience with 3-D printers and can enable our school community to utilize this tool well.

This project will help bring our Media Center into the 21st century, putting us on the cutting edge of technology.

It will introduce students to a new technology that is quickly changing the world. By default it fosters intellectual curiosity and excitement as students watch an item "print." It personifies the ideas behind STEM education and 21st Century schools.
