My students come to me with diverse backgrounds. Some students love reading; some students read what they have to; other students do not read at all. Many students have not found a book that meets their interests and encourages them to read more.
My tenth grade English students want to be successful in school.
They don't feel that they have much choice or ownership in their own education. When my students are given the opportunities to try new things and work with books that they have chosen, they learn and achieve more. When given a choice, my students want to work and complete our project. Plus, they learn more when engaged with topics that interest them.
My Project
These books will help us continue to inspire students in our tenth grade research project. Students will choose a historical fiction novel, at their reading level, about a topic that interests them. After reading the novel, students will research the time period in which the novel takes place. Students will then present to the class the similarities and differences from their books and what they learned. Students will dig deeper into time periods and events that spark their interest and learn how to evaluate historical fiction texts.
My students have the potential to achieve in their academic careers.
This project will develop my students' research and critical thinking skills. These are important skills in order to be successful in college and the workforce. In addition, this project can begin to foster a lifelong love of reading for students.
