Learning English Through Technology

My students need a classroom laptop to help them study English through visuals, games, and demonstrations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology should not be a luxury; it should be a resource available to all. Our school is a chronically under-performing school that needs all the help it can get. We are just now getting technology in our classrooms. My ELD students need a classroom laptop to learn through visuals and demonstrations.

My students live in an impoverished inner-city that is surrounded by one of the wealthiest corporations in the world.

They face violence, crime, and death daily. They come to school and are frustrated, exhausted, and instructionally naive. For many of our students, school is the only place where they eat and come in contact with a positive adult influence. Despite the best efforts of the faculty, our school has dropped in API in excess of 30 points and is last in our district in students passing CAHSEE. Most of our students are African American and Latino. I am a new teacher and am doing my best to support the English language learner population at our school for this school year. Many of our students come from Latin America with little or no knowledge of English. They want to learn. I need more tools at my disposal in order to reach my students to the best of my ability.

My Project

By having a classroom laptop, my students will have a more fulfilling classroom experience. First of all, our students will not feel the stigma of being at a "poor school" without the resources to support them. Also, I will be a better teacher to them by having a computer that I can use to plan and store all of our lessons. I will be able to model for students how to write and format by having a computer set up to a projector to display modeling writing for them. I will be able to bring in classroom visuals including videos, illustrations, literacy games, film clips, audio files and more. Our school has finally received funds for document cameras and LCD projectors. Now that I have access to these technologies, I want to be able to utilize them to the best of my ability by having a classroom computing/ planning/ interaction station that I can use for limitless activities in the classroom.

My project is so important because my students need access to the same resources that more affluent districts have.

I am still a new teacher and cannot afford a laptop of my own. When I do bring in a laptop, it is my husband's that I have borrowed. This limits my planning. I have a hard time keeping track of all of my resources. Having one classroom computer will help make me more effective and engaging as a teacher. It is my belief that having an engaging classroom is the key to learning.
