Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"The more that you READ, the more things you will KNOW.
The more that you LEARN, the more places you'll GO!"
As the Leaping, Learning Librarian that loves literature at Dr. Barbara Jordan Elementary School, I believe wholeheartedly in the above quote by Dr. Seuss.
My daily mission is to encourage and promote reading in and outside of school.
In an attempt to motivate students to check out books to read, I implemented 600 minute reading parties for students that turned in their reading logs at the end of each six weeks. To my dismay the number of participants continues to dwindle, out of our 613 students, less than 200 students participated.
Dr. Barbara Jordan Elementary School is a cheery spot located in a high crime, poverty stricken area with limited resources in Dallas Southern Sector. 99% of our students receive free lunch and come from non-English, Spanish speaking households. Data shows that the majority of our parents have a third grade education and lack the education to model or require reading at home. Resources are limited and I am scrambling to give motivation to reluctant readers. I am fighting against the clock. Will you please help?
My Project
Our students lack motivation, they need short term incentives for long term results. I would love to be able to reward students during our school-wide reading celebration with a small incentive. The smallest items make a big difference to a child that lives in poverty. I am asking for bookmarks, pencils, erasers, reading badges, ribbons and reading charms. I will use these incentives to award students who reach the 600 min. reading goal each six weeks.
Please help motivate the places our students will GO with reading.
As you can see from the photo our students are excited about their literacy recognition and celebration.
Your support will give them hope, excitement and enthusiasm. I will not give up on our future and I hope you will help me continue to uplift potential leaders, doctors, lawyers, law abiding citizens and teachers.
