My students need copies of the book Each Kindess, by Jacqueline Woodson to help build a community of kindness.

Have you ever regretted something you said when you realized you could not take back the words once they were spoken? Have you been bullied or excluded because you were different? It is easy to miss opportunities to be kind. Please help us teach our students not to miss those moments.
Our school is a public, Montessori, magnet school.
Our student population is diverse, approximately 40% white and 60% African-American, with more Hispanic students joining us next year. Parents, who choose to apply to our program, want a Montessori education for their children but cannot afford a private option. Our students also come from a diverse socioeconomic background, with over 50% qualifying for free or reduced lunch. With less than 400 students, our Parent Teacher Association is small but active. The organization supports the teachers and students as it can by providing monetary support for classroom materials and hosting cultural events but its funds are limited. Our parents give greatly through their time, however, and many volunteer in the classroom, library, or other areas of the school.
Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson tells the story of a young girl who learns the importance of always being kind toward others because once the chance is gone, you can never get it back. Sometimes you do not have the option to say "I am sorry." Bullying is a topic that we talk about often in school and we know the importance of teaching our students to recognize bullying, report and try to prevent it. But we also recognize that teaching students to be kind to each other can further our efforts to minimize bullying and build a stronger community. This project will unfold in two parts. First, we will study the book Each Kindness as a school and study the main character's story. Students will engage in lessons and discussions about the character's actions and how they relate to their own lives. After the book study, we will place friendship benches, which are being donated and built by a parent, around the school to promote opportunities for students to build relationships.
Using the book and the "friendship benches" will help us address the issue of bullying at our school and in the larger community.
It will also help us teach our students that being kind to everyone, even those who are different or not part of their "group," shows strength of character and leadership. Kindness is modeled and taught. We want to show students what kindness looks like so they can teach others and let it ripple out through the community.
