If you want to experience real life, Room 190 is the place to come! Everyday we learn life skills that carry over into real life situations. Whether it's cooking, making children toys out of recycled materials, sewing quilts for those in need or simply caring for baby chicks, FACE is the place!
Savanna Oaks Middle School, a community of learners, values and supports educational excellence.
To foster the joy of learning and to prepare students for future challenges, we set rigorous academic and creative expectations for each student. Students, in turn, must show they meet these expectations. As a community, we all take part in making sure our students master the required skills to be active and productive citizens. These skill are based on individualized interests and talents. We have just begun implementing "Personalized Learning", in which instruction is geared to need and interests.
My Project
My students will use the sewing machine to make quilts for those who are in need. As required, each 7th grade class creates quilts as a part of our community service projects. These quilts are given to Gilda's Club of Madison, a cancer support community. Or the Linus Project, giving blankets to children with cancer. These project provides children with many learning opportunities: children work together to create one quilt to donate. They learn basic sewing skills, and they learn the important value of giving back to the community.
Currently I have 12 sewing machines and 30 students who take my class.
Having three students to a machine is hard when it comes to getting a project done efficiently. The more machines we have, the more projects and quilts we could produce, in a timely manner. When it comes to sewing, my students are actively engaged and look forward to coming to class. When there are no machines to use, students become discouraged and frustrated. Having more machines means better engagement and happy kids.
