Every morning our school recites The Cougar Promise that ends, "If it is to be, it is up to me." As members of our classroom community, it is up to us to be kind, civil and have compassion for others.
My 4th grade students participate in the Two-Way Immersion Program.
They work together in two different languages to find commonalities and celebrate the differences in order to come together as one classroom community. The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are hard workers that strive to do their best and come to school ready to learn!
My Project
The materials I am requesting follow a text, Bullying Hurts, Teaching Kindness Through Read Alouds and Guided Conversations by Lester L. Laminack and Reba M. Wadsworth. I envision using these materials to help my students build a classroom community that is full of kindness, civility and compassion for all. These materials are the focused read alouds and a springboard for conversations that are guided to move students toward essential understandings. Embedded in these guided conversations are opportunities for students to stretch their thinking, talk and listen actively to their partner and many opportunities to write and capture their new knowledge.
Students will work through different layers to reach the heart of compassion for others and help build and maintain a strong classroom community.
This project will make a difference, first, in my classroom by creating a bully free zone where all students are accepted with kindness.
Second, and most importantly, this project will lead my students to value all, to identify that although we may be different, we are all part of the human race. This project will change my students' lives for the better because they will be more accepting and become experts that can share their knowledge with others.
