Technology is changing the world, the classroom should be changing with it.
My students are wanting to be engaged during math centers and literacy centers through technology. We spend half of our day in centers so I can teach in more small groups.
Our school is 75% Coast Salish Native American and 70% free and reduced lunch.
Many of my students do not have learning tools or technology at home. Whenever I can incorporate technology into our day, their motivation and engagement skyrocket! We are a high poverty school, however our school has a growth mindset, and we believe that we have the power to grow our brains and change our futures. Our school day starts with a morning assembly where students drum, sing, and dance a cultural song. At this assembly our principal also sets us up for the day with a positive growth mindset message. Students leave motivated and ready to start their day. We have found that students are more invested in their learning when they have their instruction tailored to their needs.
My Project
My students need a Kindle Fire and a Kid-Proof Case. Incorporating a Kindle Fire into our daily routine will allow students access to the wide variety of high quality educational apps. Students will be able to engage in math, reading, and phonics content. They will be able to use programs that adapt to their learning needs, or to the math or reading lessons we do as a whole group. I also plan on loading the Lushootseed app onto our Kindle so students can engage with their native language.
This project will improve our classroom because it will allow me to meet with students in small groups based on their individual learning needs.
In the past, when students were not in the small group they had to work on boring worksheets or workbook pages. With this technology they can continue their learning and growth with math and reading programs that will adapt based on their needs.
