Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Communication is the key to being successful. Oral language skills improve daily by interacting with peers. Children need to be able to take part in a conversation where they answer questions, share personal stories and retell stories they have heard using details.
Most of the children that come to Kindergarten have not had the opportunity to attend a daycare or any type of preschool.
The children come with very little vocabulary. Some children do not speak in complete sentences. They use one-word questions and answers. A large part of our school population is on free or reduced price lunch. The children that I teach do not have these educational opportunities provided to them at home.
My Project
The materials I have chosen for my project will allow the children to interact with each other using language skills for learning to read and write. The magnetic write and wipe boards will be used for small group instruction to build sight word vocabulary along with enhancing writing skills. The large magnetic write and wipe board will allow children to work together to spell sight words. They can write the words and create sentences using these words. The Build-a-Word game will encourage children to use the letter skills they have attained to spell words that are common to their everyday life. The number activities will encourage the children to see visuals and build vocabulary to describe numbers in a variety of ways.
I love to see my children's faces when they learn a new word or read a word they have learned previously.
They love to write and create using the magnetic letters and dry erase markers. What a way to inspire young children to learn to read, write, and speak using new vocabulary they have learned in school. This love for learning will encourage them to continue to grow as young readers and writers.
