A fly on the wall of our kindergarten classroom would see so many different things throughout the day! They would see us counting, reading, writing, discussing, and smiling. Throughout the day, we would work in whole group, in small groups, in partners, and individually. We are learning all day!
The students at our school speak dozens of different languages and come from many varied backgrounds & cultures.
The majority of our students come from low-income homes, and do not have access to books, computers, or traditional learning resources at home. 100% of the students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Many of my kindergarten students never attended preschool or have never spoken English before they step into our school. Given all of this, they are so excited to come to school every day and to learn!
My Project
With these materials, we will be able to set up hands-on math work stations in our classroom. At math work stations, students will work in partners on a variety of different math tasks. This is an exciting time built around student choice and exploration - students will have the opportunity to choose their math work station each day and spend time with a partner exploring the materials, building conceptual math knowledge, and applying what we have learned and practiced whole group using the various math kits and supplies.
Right now, our classroom math instruction is focused largely around whole group instruction because we lack the materials to set up math work stations.
Having access to these stations will help students build number sense, learn to count, and many other math skills throughout the year. This style of learning will help students who struggle by giving them extra practice with concepts and skills they need to review. It will also support students who need more challenging work.
