Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding," said da Vinci. My students are very curious, inquisitive and eager to explore the world around them. Their eyes shine when they learn about animals, plants, the environment and people from other cultures. Kindergarten is really a year of discovery!
My students live in a technological world each time more demanding and have to grasp concepts that prepare them to respond accordingly.
Our space exploration is a great example on how science developments are used to better quality of life, and how collaboration makes it possible to achieve great things. My students need to start thinking as global citizens and to learn the importance of teamwork.
I teach 24 eager Kindergartners, in a Title I school. Most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of them are learning English as a second language and live in a high poverty area. One parent families, children being raised by grandparents, and parents working late hours are some of the difficulties facing our students. However challenged, my students are extremely motivated to learn and have curiosity to explore science as they develop their reading skills.
My Project
My kindergarten students are learning to add and to build words. They are learning that STEM+Art=STEAM. STEM is based on skills generally using the left half of the brain and thus is logic driven. Much research and data shows that activities like Arts, which uses the right side of the brain supports and fosters creativity, which is essential to innovation. Clearly the combination of STEM with Arts education (STEAM) should offer us the best chance for regaining the innovation leadership essential to the new economy.
Topics in the science books will lead us to hands on with objects easily available at school and at home: Comparing Properties. Heavy or Light ? Smooth or Rough? Floating or Sinking? Students will learn to make predictions and analyze and use graphics to present the results. They will also learn to compare and contrast. The art books have a focus in math, so they will count and use geometric shapes to form more complicated figures.
The materials in this project will provide my students the opportunity to listen to stories, improve their reading skills, improve pronunciation, advance in math, express through art and get introduced to science, technology and engineering concepts.
They will communicate ideas through words, illustrations, and charts as they present their results. They will be practice their "i" words: imagine, inspire, invent, innovate & improve.
Please help my kindergarten go full STEAM!
