Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Any classroom at our school is definitely challenging and rigorous. In just one year, our school has transitioned into a collaborative model where all classes are integrated with technology. Students and staff work on developing a growth mindset and making daily improvements.
We are the first magnet middle school in our district.
The students in our school are given the opportunity to work on classes that help develop Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math concepts. Demographically, we serve a community that is 97% Hispanic and considered socioeconomically disadvantaged. Our students have made tremendous change and growth in just one year of transition. Students have learned to work collaboratively and actively engage in the learning process. We are currently working on teaching our students how to develop more critical thinking skills. Some students have developed a fixed mindset and refuse to live up to higher expectations. Our goal this year is to help students create a growth mindset ideal and learn to motivate each other.
My Project
Malala is a person who is constantly achieving personal goals and lives the exemplary life of someone who truly believes in a growth mindset. The opportunity to watch the film and learn about her experience will help our students understand how valuable education is and how an individual who challenges herself can attain so much.
Through their Humanities course, students will learn about Malala and discuss issues like violence, reform, education, and human rights. Students in the middle school don't always feel like they can make an impact in the world. We hope that this movie will inspire them to become more active participants in their personal educational career and be inspired to change their own mindset.
After the movie, students will discuss ways to encourage others on how to become more active participants in our community and school.
Students will be encouraged to create projects in their elective courses that can provide informational text. Students will create Google drawings, Google slideshows, and documentary style videos as a reflection of what they have learned from Malala's experience to share with the staff and the school.
