Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

In our first grade classroom, my students are becoming independent learners who can use a variety of strategies to solve math problems and spell tricky words. They love to practice these skills on their personal white boards and to show their thinking using hands-on manipulative materials.

At our Pennsylvania public school on the edge of an urban center, my classroom is always busy with eager children who love to learn and are excited to use a variety of materials as they work.

Our school serves many students who are English language learners or socioeconomically disadvantaged. That makes it important to provide my diverse group of students with a wide range of materials that will help them experience the best ways to access concepts and express their understanding, no matter what kind of learner they happen to be.

My Project

Using so many different kinds of materials throughout the day is essential, but it can be hard for 6- and 7-year-old children to keep it all organized. My classroom has the materials we need, but not the storage space that would keep it all in its proper place. Storage benches with cubby holes for different kinds of materials are the perfect solution. Low to the ground with a wide open front, the cubbies will provide a storage space that is easy for young children to access. They can take responsibility for retrieving the needed supplies and for putting them away properly when they are finished. The fact that the cubbies are organized into a bench makes this storage option multi-purpose: the bench tops can be used as a surface for a book display, a material shelf, or even an extra source of seating around the room. And the six cubbies will match up perfectly along the side of our rug, which has six rows on which students sit throughout the day for lessons.

With the cubby storage benches, my students will have easy access to their personal white boards, math manipulatives, and reading materials.

We will be able to store anything needed for a whole group lesson on the meeting rug in an organized fashion. This storage system will allow us to efficiently access materials during lessons, reducing the time wasted on distribution of supplies, and teach my students important organization skills to increase their responsibility and independence!
