This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Everyone loves when they get to go and get all of their brand new supplies for school, but what if you had no where to put all of you cool new things? Well that is the dilemma when you only have tables in your classroom. Chair bags will solve this problem instantly!

I am a pre-k teacher to 20 four- and five-year-olds.

They all come from low income backgrounds in which they receive free or reduced price lunch. We are a very diverse classroom including Caucasian, African American, and multiracial students. The small school that we are in is very diverse as well. As a whole, our entire arts magnet school serves a majority of students from low income households. I have a very active, yet inquisitive group of 10 boys and 10 girls. They love to learn, ask questions, and participate in anything hands-on. Their favorite time of the day is center time when they get to be themselves and socialize with their peers. This is a very important time for them. I have to say, this is a wonderful and witty group of students that I care about a lot.

My Project

My students will be using these chair bags to keep their things in their space. A lot of the time when you are little, you do not always get your own things or personal space, so having these would allow these youngsters to take ownership in their things and have a way to keep everything organized.

Although having a bag on the back of your chair may seem simple enough, it's purpose is so much more.

Yes, my students can put their things in it, but it also serves as a way to be responsible for the things they have and to take pride in owning even the smallest things like pencils and crayons. Also, for my students who don't always come from homes where they have a lot of their own things, a bag with their name on it with their stuff can be priceless.
