My high school graphics class starts with a daily activity, which is a 5 minute exercise in either Photoshop or Illustrator. Students work on combining new skills with creative ideas to complete project ideas. They become very familiar with a mac and its programs.
Our school is rather small only graduating about 140 students each year.
Half of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Grades 7-12 are in the same building with a separation between middle and high school. They are excited about the refurbished Macs that we purchased for graphics classes and love any technological upgrades since it does not happen that often. Our students behave like a family that looks out for each other and embraces all the differences they have.
My Project
My vision is for each student to have their own flash drive. Currently, I purchase a few classroom drives which become very full very quickly and students have to wait for others to finish with them before they can use them.
When each student has access to their own flash drive, this allows everyone's work to be saved to another place besides the computer's desktop. This allows their work to be mobile and the work can be taken outside my room.
Students will learn the importance of saving their work to an alternative place. For some of them, they are learning another technical skill such as actually using a flash drive, which many surprisingly do not know.
I would love to make it a class requirement to bring their own flash drives, but I know this would draw attention to those who cannot afford one or cannot get somewhere to buy one.
A flash drive for every student who takes my computer graphics class would open lots of new doors for my students.
Currently, they are sharing my 2 personal flash drives among 70 students registered for computer graphics.
