Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Each day is different in our computer lab/classroom, but one of the main goals that does not change is keeping kids on task. We spend a great amount of time using software that engages students in reading and math. In order for this work to be effective they have to stay focused.

My students come from many different backgrounds.

Our school attracts many who are there by choice as well as those from our neighborhood. Our school has grades K-8 so many of our teachers experience the joy of watching our students grow (literally and figuratively). Our new computer lab/classroom serves our elementary grades K-5. Having (30) computers in one place provides an opportunity for classes to work as a whole class or for small groups to come together from various classes, based on their specific needs.

My Project

Our classroom did not get equipped until after the first several months of the school year. In a rush to get going I purchased some inexpensive headphones that are starting to prove that "you get what you pay for". This time, with a little planning and investigating we have found a much better alternative. The headphones I am requesting will be used for listening to lectures that are available as tutorials from our math software and also for our guided reading program for the younger students. Microphones will enable instructors to speak with students one-on-one as a component of our next project.

Like most students, ours love to use technology whenever they can.

Having this new equipment will help to make the learning process more enjoyable as well as productive. We have programs in place that really make a difference- the key being getting the students to want to use them.
