Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I service students (Prk-6) with various disabilities for their basic academic and social needs. They all learn from different modes, especially through seeing and manipulating objects. They need visuals and hands-on activities to help them retain new information to carry over into their written work.
My students are from a low income community with parents that want what is best for their kids yet do not have the resources to provide much at home.
My students all have various disabilities that impair them from succeeding as fast as their peers on grade level. They all come to me, the Special Education Lab teacher, at various time blocks for reading, math, handwriting, spelling, behavior then return to their regular classrooms to be exposed to regular classroom instruction. My students all want to learn, yet can get frustrated when they lack the materials needed to assist them in their learning activities. I especially love to see their eyes light up when they have achieved a new skill. It is like that light bulb turning on and wow what an excitement is received when an understanding has sunk in!
My Project
My students have been recognizing and counting money to the one dollar bill. I would like to increase their knowledge with pricing objects, paying for them, knowing what to give and what to receive. Using a cash register will be one step to near life experiences with their world. Another skill my students desperately need is to understand the use of measurement. They need to recognize weight and volume and reading a scale. We will be using this in our math lessons to help them in the classroom and outside of the classroom environment to help their families shop in grocery stores. The students also will be recognizing fractions in various forms and utilizing the measuring cups and spoons for activities such as cooking, projects, testing and generating hypothesis in their work. My students also need to recognize the difference of 2-D and 3-D shapes and their properties. With these hands-on manipulative these students will be able to carry over into their work and life skills.
The resources I have chosen will help them with their daily lives in and out of the classroom.
It is very important for my students to be aware of their environments, especially in the world around them. By your loving donations, time and consideration, you will be adding to the items my students need to further their individual growth. My Lab students will highly benefit from these items and this is our goal to continue on in their educational needs. Thank you for everything.
