Junior Scholastic: Because Who Doesn't Love Non-Fiction?!

My students need 25 Junior Scholastic magazines, to help them discover a love for reading current, non-fiction text in a fun and exciting way!

My Students

Students often describe non-fiction text as "boring" or "uninteresting" -- I want to introduce them to a fresh way of reading current events.

Teaching at a Title 1 school means that my students come from a wide-variety of backgrounds and personal experiences.

I think it's important for them to be exposed to current events and see the bigger picture happening around them. Knowing what's going on in today's society and being able to connect it to yourself and your community is a vital skill.

My Project

The biggest opportunity Junior Scholastic will provide for us is amplifying our classroom debates. Developing a well-researched argument is critical to the middle school curriculum. The articles in the weekly reader will provide us with a jumping off point for research, forming opinions and debating key issues.

This project is so important because it is another way we can integrate literacy into our classroom in a meaningful way.

Students are becoming accustomed to obtaining their news through quick interactions with technology. I want to show them another way they can stay current with issues/ideas in the world around them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
