Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a special education teacher, I try to bring Albert Einstein's view on education into my class classroom, "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."
Help my students express their knowledge through a hands-on, out of the classroom, field trip to a science lab!
The students in my class are vibrant, energetic, and creative young minds.
Their school is located in the poorest Congressional District in the United States. My students face many obstacles in and out of the classroom.
Most of the students I teach receive free lunch, some live in temporary housing, and all are learning to manage their unique learning challenge in the classroom.
It is difficult to get the entire class on task and engaged in the lesson, but it is a challenge I will not give up on. My students deal with issues greater than some adults, and it is my goal to help them overcome them and come out on top.
My Project
This project is for a field trip for our class to visit the Brooklyn Children's Museum. This trip will be an all inclusive summary to our geology unit!
Our students will be able to leave the Bronx and visit the Brooklyn Children's Museum armed with the background knowledge of the different types of rocks, their physical properties, and Mohs Hardness Scale.
Once at the museum, students will be able to explore the museum's collection of rocks and minerals and classify them using their expertise.
Many of my students have never left the Bronx, yet New York City has so much to offer socially, academically, and artistically.
Exposing my special education class to the opportunities in their backyards would open their eyes to exploration.
