Mrs. L. from GA is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need six Ozobot Bits and markers to continue their exploration into computer programming.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
A spark was ignited in our computer lab that started with the Hour of Code, which introduced students to the exciting world of computer programming. The addition of the six Ozobot Bits will continue to fan the flame of coding for my K-5 students.
My students are eager learners but often face challenges because of their low socio-economic status and lack of access to the Internet and technology tools at home.
Coming to the computer lab every week is such a high point for them because they have access to a whole new world of learning and playing. My students love to use games and apps for instruction as well as play but were simply amazed when I told them they could learn to code their own. After participating in the week long initiative with the Hour of Code, students now come to class and ask to "go code" during their computer lab time. I love it! There is no boundary for what they can learn from computer science because of their desire and fearlessness and I am learning to code right along with them!
The students will work in small groups to use the six Ozobot Bits to create basic computer programming algorithms using color coding with markers. These tasks will enhance their critical thinking skills and imaginations as they learn to design their own programs. They will also use the online Ozobot Bit apps to further explore computer programming. I believe computer science skills will be highly advantageous for any student but especially my students who consist of a diverse student population with high poverty.
I envision a much more diverse field of future computer programmers if we can continue this trend of early access to computer science and technology for every student.
If we give this generation equitable educational opportunities, then they will create a better world for all of us!
