My Students
I am a third grade teacher in Queens. Luckily I have the opportunity to take my class outdoors to play in our schoolyard. I have noticed that the students do not know how to play many of the games that I grew up playing and some have difficulty sharing equipment and participating in team activities.
My class is made up of 29 eight and nine year old children.
They are a very sweet and funny group of kids. I truly enjoy being their teacher. Children come first in my school. The entire staff works very hard to meet their needs. We believe that children should be happy and school is a place where they should feel safe, welcome and look forward to coming.
My Project
This year I have taught several students how much fun it can be to jump rope and play games such as Chinese Jump Rope and Steal the Bacon. Unfortunately most of my outdoor equipment has become worn out, has flown over the school yard fence, or has broken. The jump ropes are frayed and several balls have popped.
I am asking for outdoor play materials such as jump ropes, Hola hoops, playground balls, chalk and Frisbees.
This equipment will help my students to really enjoy their outdoor play. It will give them the opportunity to work in teams to play sports and learn to work together. Many of them do not have the opportunity to do this outside of school since they attend after school programs and get home late.
This project will help my students learn the skill that team activities provide such as problem solving and working through differences through fun activities such as soccer and playing catch.
It will teach them to take turns as well as how to include others in their play.
