I've said this a thousand times and will no doubt say it at least two thousand more times: My classroom is an incredible place to teach and to learn. I live to teach, and the resilient young students I work with each day are one of my greatest loves in life!
My school is a second-chance school.
Our main goal is to turn students around and to get them back on track for graduation. We strive to create students who are college and career ready, and we push them to create goals that extend beyond our classroom walls. Over the years, we've seen our students move on to become engineers, software designers, nurses, and more. Our school is full of teachers who are willing to individualize instruction and learning experiences to meet the needs of our at-risk students. They come to us, sometimes daring us to help them, to push them, to free them...and we do!
My Project
My students have a very unique opportunity to meet the Civil Rights giant John Lewis IN PERSON. There is no way I am going to pass up this kind of an opportunity. However, before we travel to meet John Lewis up close and personally, my students and I want to read his graphic novel MARCH: BOOK ONE in order to learn more about John Lewis before we meet him. John Lewis helped change history, and now my students and I have the chance to learn about him and to shake his hand. We will engage in reading, writing, research, speaking, and more with the goal of being as informed as we can possibly before meeting this man I know none of us will ever forget. We don't just want to read about History--we want to shake its hand.
When I told my good friend, an author and historian, that I was taking my students to meet John Lewis, this is what he had to say: "Meeting John Lewis has been one of my biggest dreams in life!
May I go, too?"
This opportunity to meet a legend of the Civil Rights Movement is one we do not want to let slip away. With your help, my students will have the opportunity to engage in literacy activities that will literally lead us right to the feet of John Lewis himself, but we need your help!
