Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I thought that class today was interesting and fun."
"I liked that we got to help each other."
These are some exit ticket responses my students wrote after working in workstations. They really enjoy adding pictures and diagrams to their Interactive Math Notebooks and working in groups.
I teach 6th grade mathematics to an honors class, an on-grade class, and a beginner ESL class.
In the ESL class alone we have students from 10 different countries, including Tibet, Mongolia, India, and Ecuador! We host a Multicultural Feast and Talent Show to celebrate and appreciate the diversity that our school represents. Our school provides our students with a safe, welcoming, and nurturing learning environment. My students recently suggested we start a math peer tutoring club. Many of the honors level students have volunteered to tutor students in my other classes during their lunch period once a week. I am proud to say that my students represent exactly what our school mission declares. Many of my students struggle to learn mathematics, so I implement group work, Interactive Math Notebooks, videos, and visuals into my classroom.
My Project
The students have requested that we get a printer for our classroom so that they can print extra handouts, writing assignments, projects, and pictures pertaining to math class. Many of my students do not have a printer at home (only 43% own printers) and would benefit by being able to print their assignments in my classroom. My students have recently become familiar with using Google Docs so that they can share assignments and projects with me. I would easily be able to print out any of their work in the classroom through Google Docs if we had a class printer. The beginner ESL class also require many visuals to help them understand difficult math concepts. These visuals are added to their Interactive Math Notebooks, which are filled with Prime Factorization Trees (that actually pop out of their notebooks!) and colorful foldables. Having a printer would make these resources much more accessible for my students.
I am so lucky that I get to teach this group of wonderful students every day.
They are kind, hard working, and strive to become better learners. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have the ability to print assignments at home. Some do not even have a computer or access to the Internet. Having access to a printer in class would encourage them to complete their assignments. It would allow them more opportunities to find online resources. I truly believe it will make a difference.
