Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember all of those moments in high school when you wished you were able to capture it on camera? Especially when you've just won an award for the school.

My students attend an urban high school in the state of Kansas.

There is a HIGH population of students on free and reduced meals. Therefore, the teachers and coaches often provide those little extras that keep extra-curricular activity students energized. The students on my debate and forensics team are intrinsic motivators. This is evident, because they stay late for weeknight tournaments or wake up earlier than a school day in order to attend day long Saturday tournaments. My debaters love playing practical jokes on me whenever we have to be at school by 6:45 am Saturday mornings. They say, "we are just making sure you are ready for those awards we are about to bring you." I work with a great group of students who often have home lives that could easily lead them down the wrong paths of life.

My Project

Well, my debate and forensics team has had NUMEROUS of those 'darn-it I wish we could record or take a picture of this award winning' moments. We are an urban high school rebuilding a tradition and we would like to capture these moments via a photo and video journal. Most of our tournaments occur after school or ALL day long on Saturday. My students commit to these lengthy tournaments and sometimes they walk away with awards. There has been a number of times we wished we were able to capture the awards ceremony in photo or video, because these are special moments for my students (and the parents that could not attend the tournaments). Also, the school board would love to see the accomplishments of our students (and cell phone photos do not do justice to these momentous occasions...trust me, we have tried). As for the coffee pot, my team LOVES going to fast food establishments for that afternoon pick-me-up prior to going to tournaments or that cup-o-jo before Saturday tournaments.

Sponsoring this project means our team will get energized with coffee and tea so we can bring home awards.

Thus allowing our parents, teachers, administrators, school board members and many other people a chance to see what the debate and forensics team accomplishes by using a clear camcorder versus the tiny pics from our cell phones.
