Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sitting still is so last year! It's hip to be on the move!
I am the proud teacher of 21 bouncy, energetic, active fifth graders in a rural county in North Carolina.
My students have a lot of challenges in their lives; 99% of the students at our school come from homes of poverty and 75% do not speak English at home. I have so much respect for my 10 year olds who endure much, yet still come to school excited and ready to explore and discover. This year our motto is Ad Astra Per Aspera, because we are not going to let any difficulty stop us from reaching the stars!
My students have a need to move! When we sit down to learn I look across my room and see kids bouncing, wiggling, and squirming as we focus on our content. I incorporate a lot of moving around the room into my day, but sometimes we need to be able to sit and focus.
My Project
The wobble seats would be perfect for my students. If I see a kid squirming, I can just give them a wobble seat to sit on. The effect would be the same as if they were sitting on an exercise ball, except without having a giant bouncy ball in the room. All that squirmy energy would get focused into staying on the ball, instead of distracting other students. The wobble seats will help my students be leaders of themselves by giving them another tool to help them refocus as they monitor their learning.
The movement thumball game is for breaking up long learning sessions. When the eyes glaze over I can pull out the ball for a few minutes and get some oxygen back in their brains! As they toss the ball around they will have to do the motions described on the ball. It will be a perfect energizer to get the blood pumping!
One of my goals as a teacher is to equip my students with the tools they need to succeed.
For many of my students movement devices and extra movement breaks are the tools they need to succeed. I want my students to be proactive about monitoring their own learning and problem solving for success. It isn't fair to blame a child for moving and distracting others in class if there are no tools to help that child control their movement. These tools will empower my students for success!
