We've got the basics, now we just need a little "boost"--supplemental materials in our classroom will make our activities flow!
Our school is an urban school with a diverse population of learners.
Approximately 50% of my learners this year are ADVANCED readers--two or more levels above 2nd grade expectations! Additionally, I have a few English Language Learners and several lower socioeconomic status kids who have limited resources at home.
These second grade students have great attendance and participation and need to have learning materials in-hand to make school worthwhile!
My Project
In second grade, we work to solidify number patterns--counting by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's is a HUGE skill kids need to master. Coins really help with that and have a real world application for some fairly abstract concepts!
Additionally, we're maxing out our classroom library for advanced readers. I need challenging guided reading sets for kids to use, so we can share a love of reading. We'll read and do pre & post reading activities to really interact with literature.
When I think about this project I think primarily about how it will equip me, the teacher, to be better prepared in many of learning activities.
When I am prepared and enthused about these materials, my students will be infused with the same attitude. We'll be respectful of classroom materials and use them regularly.
My students and I will feel so valued--we'll know that our learning environment is important!
