My students need back to school supplies such as pencils, paper, glue, and dividers that are often not given to them by their families. A printer and presenter remote also help me provide quality instruction.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
One of my favorite quotes about education was said to me by a mentor: "Your students aren't going to learn because of 'what' you're teaching them. They're going to learn because of 'why' you're teaching them... MLK never made an 'I have a plan' speech. He made an 'I have a dream' speech."
The school in which I teach is very high-need, though we are constantly progressing, now rated a C, whereas a couple years ago, we were considered failing.
We are consistently looking for ways to foster student achievement, especially in the special education classrooms. My students were placed in my classroom because they have various exceptionalities, thus each student requires something extra to be successful; something more than a general education classroom can provide. My students have vibrant personalities, though no two are the same in terms of their behaviors, learning styles, or social interactions. They keep me on my toes and teach me just as much as I am teaching them, if not more.
My Project
Many of the supplies I am requesting are basic school supplies that every student needs: pencils, paper, folders, post-its for books, etc. However, there are some supplies I wish to explain: The dry erase markers are to be used for healthy competition. Recently, I was generously given white boards for my students to use, and I would like them to be able to answer quick review questions in groups to accumulate points. Learning can be fun! I am also requesting items like an electric pencil sharpener and folders to keep the focus on learning in the classroom. Often times, due to a lack of organization and supplies, students spend time going to other classrooms in search of supplies or combing through their book sacks searching for lost notes. This way, we will be able to keep our focus on the material at hand. I also requested a printer and a presenter remote, so I can have access to the materials I need to give my students the information they need clearly and effectively.
I have spent the last year working tirelessly to build the morale of my students, to prove to them that they are no less than the students in general education classrooms; thus they are capable of performing well and achieving higher levels.
I believe my students deserve to start out the year encouraged. Instead of being distracted by the lack of paper or pencils in the classroom, these school supplies will provide my students and myself with the tools we need to focus on achieving our goals.
