Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever hoped or had an idea to change the world? My students have those hopes and dreams. One way they want to change the world is by preserving it - one step, one classroom at a time. They need these bins as resources to help them towards changing the world into how they want it to be.
My students are from an urban public school.
They are in a public high school for some of the top achievers in the district. They are in an International Baccalaureate School, where they have to maintain a certain GPA in order to remain. My students are 11th and 12th grade International Baccalaureate students. They are bright and inquisitive. They come from very diverse backgrounds. Despite hardships in their own lives, they have grand visions for themselves and the world that they are working hard to achieve. However, this is also a high poverty rate school. Most of my students cannot even afford to buy a poster board for a project. This means that most supplies for daily activities and projects, come from teachers' budgets. So, funding a school wide recycling initiative is out of the question.
My Project
Students will be distributing these bins throughout the school. They will be encouraging students and teachers to use these bins to recycle materials, rather than just throw them away. These 11th and 12th grade students will then be responsible for maintaining the recycling program by collecting the recyclable material and transporting it to the appropriate location for teachers and students.
These students want to make a difference.
This will help show students that they can do this. One project at a time, they can engage others to work on issues that they are passionate about. This will help to build them into passionate, giving, global citizens as they enter adulthood - while also making us a greener campus!
