It's All Greek to Me! Mythological Learning in a Modern Worl
My students need a collection of 9 Greek and Roman mythology books to discover the wonder and practice their own mythological writings in the Mythology English Elective.
Thunderbolts! Achilles' Tendon! Zeus' love affairs! Most adults are familiar with the traditional Greek or Roman myths. And we see evidence of these myths everywhere: FTD, Atlas, Nike. My students will be learning many of these myths for the first time in this course. They need resources to compare.
Our school is a rural high school of around 550 students.
Our class sizes range from 20-25 students/class. Our students come from a poor rural area, with few advancement opportunities presented outside of the school walls. Around 65% of our students come from at or below poverty level. School is often their haven-where they find caring adults, hot meals, and opportunities to reach farther than they think they can.
My Project
Many students choose the Greek and Roman Mythology class because they have a vague familiarity of the myths, usually due to popular culture, and are curious to learn more. This is the perfect example of what education and learning should be-student centered and focused on their desire to learn more about a specific topic. Being able to delve into the myths, through readings, video clips, and writing gives students many forms of learning and provides many outlets for student products. We will also examine the fine line between myth and historical fact. Students in this course will read myths in order to write their own, witness the allusions to mythology in everyday life, and to turn a myth into a product (script, advertisement, etc) as a final project.
This project will allow my students to see myths as an oral tradition passed down for generations and each retelling brings something different to the original myth.
These resources will provide my students with many "eyes" if you will-a look at myths from different views and centuries telling essentially the same story. Thank you!
