My students need a new tenor saxophone as part of our five-year instrument funding plan. The ones we have are much older, and some of the oldest ones are unusable.
Our classroom is a constant buzz of sound. From students talking or practicing to the music created in rehearsal, there is rarely a quiet moment in the band room. The band room is like a safe haven for many students, and everyone seems to enjoy coming in every morning.
Our students are driven and motivated to do well in music.
They accept the challenging music that we give them and are willing to put in the work to get ready for concerts. Our school is in rural Ohio, which means we have a lot of students from farming families. These students have good work ethics and understand that a good product is the result of hard work. They are all close with each other, making a welcoming and positive environment.
My Project
The high school students have access to enough tenor saxophones to support an acceptable sized section. The junior high, however, has instruments that are 25-30 years old and are in very poor condition. Having this one saxophone would be able to help saxophone students that have hopes to play tenor saxophone in high school without having to switch late in the game. These students will have more success at the high school level if they start this new instrument in junior high. They would receive more individualized instruction and will see more development of their skills.
This project will make a difference by fulfilling part of our five-year instrument purchasing program.
If we had access to another tenor saxophone, we would be able to help more students branch out and explore their musical talents through another instrument option. The tenor saxophones we have now are unusable, so only some students are able to take tenor as an instrument. Having access to one more tenor would help both our students and the band program as a whole.
