Science is not a class that students look forward to going to every day. In order to engage my students, I incorporate many hands-on activities. Students get a chance to explore science equipment during lab, as well as interact with a variety of different manipulatives.
I teach in an urban public school.
My students come from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Despite these differences, my students give their all to be sure they understand any topic that is given to them.
As a result of implementing inquiry-based science, students are excited to come to class. When students line up to enter the classroom, I am constantly asked "what are we doing today?" and "are we doing lab today?"
I teach 4 different sets of students including a gifted class that is using a high school level curriculum, as well as ICT classes that incorporate both general and special education students.
There are 116 students that will benefit from these magazines directly.
My Project
I am requesting 35 subscriptions to Science World magazine to help promote content area literacy! Our school uses Fridays as a "tough-text" day. In my class, students are given articles related to that week's lessons to decode and analyze. By using "Science World" articles rather than articles printed off of different websites, I can be sure that students are receiving articles that are both current and high-quality. Students will not have to ask WHY they are learning something, as they can see what is going on in the science world today.
Scientists are constantly publishing journal articles and explaining their research in different science journals. Students will be able to feel that they are doing work that is similar to scientists. These articles will supplement all inquiry-based activities that are done in the classroom.
These magazines will help students strengthen their critical thinking skills, deepen their vocabulary, and allow students to use current articles to draw real-world connections to the materials learned in class.
With the Common Core Standards, informational reading in content areas is extremely important. This subscription will only help students on their path of education.
