My Students

4th-grade is a world of its own! We spend our days reading books we love, and working in collaborative groups with peers on our own level. Even when you are 9 and 10 years-old you still love to read and be read to! Our reading block could be the only time a student is read to, in his or her day.

I have 25 wonderful, funny, gifted, loving students.

They are dedicated to setting goals for themselves, and working hard to learn! My students love technology in the classroom. We are growing together through Skype in the Classroom, iPad apps, and laptops. Most of my students come from a background of poverty. They don't have the opportunity at home to listen to reading, with access to the text. We are an arts based school, focusing our learning through hands on artwork, the performing arts, as well as humanities.

My Project

Students in my classroom will use the iPod's to listen to reading, through apps where I have downloaded grade appropriate text, recorded grade level text, and set links to websites such as RAZ Kids. Students will engage in our 5 station reading program every morning. They will check out the iPods and settle down to be read to. After reading and listening, students will complete reading response pages in an interactive reading journal. The iPod will also be used as a reward center, when students reach a personal goal. They can check the iPod out to play education games and work on projects.

This project will make a difference by sparking learning and love of reading in the hearts of 9 and 10-year-olds.

For kids who already love reading, it will give them a chance to fall in love with the act of being read to, so they understand that reading can be a relaxing activity and a reward. It will also give my very 21st century students a chance to reward themselves with technology that they love and enjoy! I am raising a group of digital natives!
