Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Keeping students engaged during their reading block is a huge challenge most teachers face. I am one of these teachers. I struggle with being able to keep my students engaged and on task during their intervention/extension time and during their reading station time, but I think I have found a way!
I have 18 amazing second graders in my class this year.
Last year I taught first grade and decided to loop with my kids and be their teacher for second grade. I felt a bond with my students that I decided to stick with them and to continue to watch them grow and learn. They are hard working and incredible kids that face so many challenges at home. Some of my students experience things no kid should experience at 7 and 8 years of age, but that doesn't stop them from coming to school everyday and giving me their best effort.
My Project
We are asking for 4 iPads for our classroom. The iPads main use in our class will be to allow the students to use technology during their reading block. You might think, why would they need iPads if they should be reading books? Let me explain. I have created QR codes for my kids to use while they read. My school has a designated block of time for students to receive intervention or extension lessons. In order to accommodate all of the students during this block of time I have used QR codes to go with our reading lesson in order for my students to work on the skills I am teaching, independently. This is their extension of my lesson, so they are able to get practice on their own. While I meet with my intervention group to give them extra support my students work on their extension lessons on their own. By using the iPads in the classroom they will be able to have access to using QR codes in our classroom which has also kept my students engaged in their reading.
Of course QR codes are not the only use we will have for the iPads, but it definitely is an important one for my students.
This past week my students have started using the QR codes to work on reading chapters of Charlotte's Web independently. I teach the chapter and do a lesson then the following days after that they are working on digging deeper into the text to understand vocabulary and answer text based questions. These iPads will help my students improve their reading skills!
