"You just can't beat the person who never gives up."-Babe Ruth
Have you ever struggled with something and wanted to give up? Each and everyday my special education students face obstacles that can discourage and defeat them BUT they NEVER give up!
My students are an inspiring, diverse group of special education 4th graders from a city in Massachusetts called Lowell!
Lowell is a large inner city school district and our students have different needs. Many of my students go home and do not have access to resources to help them succeed. This is why it is important to incorporate powerful learning tools, such as technology while they are in school.
My school is one elementary in this large district and it is a comfortable, POWERFUL school!. Our school motto is perseverance, resiliency, and determination. Each individual in my building is dedicated to the academic and social growth of our ENTIRE community of learners.
My students are incredible. They are unique and encompass a diverse set of needs. They know that they learn best in different ways then their peers but that it is okay because that is what makes them special! It is my job to motivate and personalize learning to best meet the needs of each INDIVIDUAL child.
My Project
My students will be able to use the iPads to access applications that will assist in enhancing their learning. Every child learns differently and the iPads are for every kind of learner. The iPads will be used for visual stimulation in order to motivate and capture students attention, especially when it may be difficult to stay on task.
The iPads also have a video feature on them. My students can video tape themselves reading a story and then play it back so they can hear how they are reading particular words. This is called text to speech. Applications can also be used to specialized and differentiate instruction for students that are struggling to understand concepts. Repetitive, visual practice when concepts are challenging can motivate students.
Motivation is the key to success.
Since my students are not given many opportunities or get to experience the use of technology outside of school they are willing to jump hurdles in order to use iPads. Jumping hurdles means that they do not give up and they do not shut down. Getting my students to believe in themselves is the most important part of my job. Through the use of iPads my students will have full access to differentiated learning!
