My students are solving real-world, local, environmental problems in their community. But it's very difficult to do this without having access to technology. My students want to be able to do more with the data they collect. If we had technology to use in class, we could make more of an impact.
I teach in a low-income, urban district.
Some students come to my class already knowing a lot about the environment and the ecosystem they are a part of, but others come to class not knowing what plants are and telling me that they have never taken a walk in a forest. It is absolutely amazing to see the transformation of students who have behavioral issues. This type of hands-on problem solving and getting outdoors is what these students especially need. I'm really trying to get these students to "do" science and not just learn about science.
My Project
With iPads, my students will be able to collect data, graph and analyze their data, write formal lab reports, create artifacts (such as videos, etc.) to educate the public, and Skype or communicate with scientists, other authentic audiences, or experts from around the world. The possibilities are endless! My students will learn 21st century competencies, such as communicating effectively, and also learn how to solve problems.
This donation will help my classroom by giving us more opportunities to incorporate more technology and allow us to work on more engaging activities and projects.
This will change my students' lives by showing them that they can do anything they put their minds to. They will be amazed with the problems they can come up with solutions to (that even experts are having trouble solving)! This will change my students' mindset for life by putting them on the path for success.
