Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day, my students enter my classroom and I try to make it a new and engaging experience that will give their minds and hands a break from lectures and note-taking. My goal is to have each lesson have hands-on engagement activities to make the lessons more fun and exciting.
In our ever-changing technological world, I want to equip my students with the understanding that they can do more than just discover - they can create!
My favorite thing about teaching middle schools students is that they have such a love of learning and sense of curiosity. Every new concept in my Geometry, Engineering, Technology and Film classes open new doors to discovery.
I teach Honors Geometry, Introduction to Engineering Design, Information, Communication Technology, and Lights, Camera, Film Literacy! to a enthusiastic group of 6th and 8th graders. Many of my students are ELLs and are on free-and-reduced-lunches. Often, their only interaction with computers is during my class. It is a true joy seeing my students interact with new technologies and expanding their knowledge of their potential.
My Project
We are requesting six iPad mini tablets with protective cases. We plan to use these during small groups for all of the 4 different STEM related content areas: geometry, engineering, technology and film. For geometry, we will use the iPads for 3D modeling. For engineering, the students will take creating to a new level as they make presentations, portfolios and projects with their design ideas and concepts. In my 6th grade technology class, the students will further their knowledge of coding by designing and creating games for iOS. And finally, my film class will use the iPads for filming, editing and creating special effects. Using technology to supplement our STEM classes is an exciting way for students to apply the skills they are working on in class.
Students don't always have access to technology like this outside of school.
Technology is an exciting and engaging way for students to practice skills they learn in school. In our ever-changing technological world, kids are going to be surrounded by different types of technology in their lives, future education, and someday, in their jobs. It is important that we familiarize kids with emerging technologies and help them learn to adapt to new technologies as they become lifelong learners.
