The students in my semester-long science class want to learn. They are great students! They look for books related to science topics to expand their learning.
My students are mostly from low-income, minority families.
They come to school without the most basic supplies, like pencils and paper. The atmosphere is one where the students don't put forth much effort because they aren't pushed to do so. In my class, I push my students because I know they can do the work I ask of them. Many of my students don't have background knowledge for science. Non-fiction science books on the shelf will allow them to deepen their understanding. Students without background knowledge can gather information from multiple resources. Students who already understand the basic building blocks of science can enrich their thinking with the non-fiction texts.
My Project
I have a bookcase in my classroom and it is empty. It is my goal to fill the bookcase with non-fiction books that relate to the standards taught in the science curriculum. Books would be used during the units giving students multiple resources to access the information.
I found books that cover topics such as Chemistry, Energy and famous scientists. I also found a few books that are about Newton's Laws. I hope that these books will engage my students in our different unit studies.
I always talk to my students about what they are going to study when they go to college.
I am really trying to encourage all of my students to think about pursuing degrees in science-related fields. These nonfiction books will help them to see the world of science.
