Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of the students come into my classroom with only a few school supplies so to ask them to purchase glue, colored pencils and scissors is a lot; when you add a separate 3-ring binder and divider tabs it is over the top. Based on test results, interactive notebooks are a great way to learn.

We are a very diverse and one of the most mobile schools in our district with a military as well as large Hispanic populations.

Many of our parents work two or more jobs to make ends meet and students are transferring in and out of the school everyday so it is difficult for new students to stay organized. Many of the students who attend this school are lower than average in reading and writing skills and have a need to "catch-up" to what the expectations are for typical 7th grader. Interactive notebooks are an easy way for all levels of students to learn the material and to stay organized in doing so. It is a way to teach through all learning styles: visual, tactile and listening. For those advanced students, they can make higher level connections and for the lower students they don't have to spend so much time taking notes, but can use the additional time to process information.

My Project

The interactive notebook is a tool to help students remember and review information needed for assessments. The right side of the notebook is used for notes provided by the teacher; this is the side that students use to study for assessment. Research shows that teachers who provide students with notes have better achievement than those whose students personally recorded them. The use the left side of the notebook to put the information into their own words, drawings, etc. This helps by making connections between what is experienced (learned) and what that experience (information) means to the learner. Interactive notebooks help students’ process information, study and review for assessments and personalize the content knowledge being presented. Students will use critical-thinking skills to organize and process information. As a result, they will become more creative, more independent thinkers, and will develop a deeper understanding of the information being taught.

By students not having to purchase the "extra" colored pencils, scissors and glue, all students, whether they can afford it or not, will be able to participate in putting together their own notebook.

Some students who come in later in the year will use the binder on the very day they arrive so they immediately feel part of the classroom by participating in the same activities as everyone else. Using interactive notebooks will change my students' lives through better learning and organization.
