This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to just take notes with no personal connection to your writing? My students create journals which respond to literature, the arts, Socratic Seminars and their own personal opinions. They see their growth not only as students but as writers. It is very effective.

My students are from the inner city of California.

They are primarily Latino and from first generation immigrants who want a better life for their kids. Many of my students are very bright but have not been given the same chances of their contemporaries. They are creative, analytical and ready for the chance to prove their intelligence. I am awed daily by the stories and the life challenges these students overcome to get an education. The school is a college preparatory school and many students are prepared to become proficient learners by hard work and dedication. They feel lucky to have an opportunity to prove themselves and I feel lucky to have the chance to give it to them.

My Project

My students will be able to use the notebooks to create their stories, to respond to literature and to brainstorm for future projects. Students personalize their notebooks so that they take ownership of their work and it is a necessity for the class. Students will create presentations and participate in group/pair share to increase their writing and comprehension skills.

This project is important because it creates a portfolio for the students to see how they have grown as readers and writers.

It also teaches them the important skill of reflection and response. They will be able to use various modalities to communicate to the teacher while maintaining their individuality.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
