Do you remember the excitement of live theater? At my school, theater is a major avenue for students to demonstrate understanding of academic content. Students also provide the technical support, as they are in charge of lighting and sound cues and controlling video projection and timing.
We are a rural school, which utilizes the arts as a means of fostering understanding of core academic content.
Our plays (often original productions written by students) explore math, science, and social studies through the integration of visual, music, movement, and technology. We are a K-8th grade school, serving over 380 students, with a poverty rate of almost 50% free and reduced lunch.
My Project
Theater is an amazing tool for engaging students. Beginning in Kindergarten, students participate in a variety of stage performances, with lighting and sound and technical support provided through our middle school AV team. The AV team is a group of students who have been trained on how to use the lighting and sound boards, and how to design sound cues on a laptop, and how to run video from a laptop. Being a part of the AV club is an honor and a chance for students to give service to the school and show leadership.
This laptop will be dedicated to the theater and will be used by the AV team to run all the sound cues for a show, and control video and other multimedia applications that are shown in the theater.
There is no dedicated laptop for the theater, and the laptop has to be "borrowed" from a mobile cart.
This results in many scheduling conflicts. Either a classroom ends up short, or a production gets a laptop that can't do everything we need it to do. This laptop will ensure that the AV team has the proper tool for the theater.
